BETWEEN GLIMPSE AND RECORD: Experiments in Images and Texts

WRITING WORKSHOP
Facilitated by Emmanuel Iduma
27.–29.06.2018 12:00–15:00
Fee: 60 EUROS

The workshop is conceived for 10 participants, please register until 15.06.2018 at:

by sending your portfolio or writing sample that shows your interest in the relation of image–text.

What autonomous thing comes into being when word saunters into image, language being so approximate and superfluous? This image-text workshop will convene writers and visual artists to discuss the interaction between the practice of writing and that of art-making. Over a three-day period, in an atmosphere of experimentation and creative exchange, we will study novels, photo-books, artist monographs, exhibitions, multi-genre books, and digital publications, with the aim of paying attention to a contiguous poetic form. Each day of the workshop includes an activity that allows for a collaborative assessment of ideas gleaned from our studies.

Participants in the workshop can expect a rigorous exploration of not only the possibilities of form, but also its political implications. In what ways do images and text combine to elucidate the phenomenology of representation?

EMMANUEL IDUMA is a writer of fiction and nonfiction. Born and raised in Nigeria, his essays and stories appear frequently in journals, magazines, artists’ books, and exhibition catalogues. He is the author of The Sound of Things to Come (first published as Farad in Nigeria), and received a 2017 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation grant in arts writing. A Stranger’s Pose, his narrative nonfiction book containing photographs, will be published by Cassava Republic Press in October 2018.

He trained as a lawyer, and received an MFA in Art Criticism and Writing from the School of Visual Arts, New York, where he now teaches. In 2017, he was associate curator of the Nigerian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. He is editor of Saraba Magazine, which he co-founded.
