Vita

Carla Bessa was bon in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. She studied acting at the university of Rio de Janerio and at Casa de Artes de Laranjeiras. In 1991 she came to Germany and started working as an actor and director for theatres. Since 2010 she has been translating for Brazilian publishers of German literature, i.a. Christa Wolf, Max Frisch and Ingeborg Bachmann, as well as literature for children and young adults. In 2014 she attended the ViceVersa: German-Brazilian translator workshop at the LCB. In 2015 she participated in the translator workshop "Kein Kinderspiel!" in Hamburg. She lives in Berlin, working as a translator and writer. She writes short stories and reviews for several online magazines and for the literary magazine  Jornal Rascunho from Brazil.

What brought you to Berlin? Love? World politics? Or was it a coincidence?

Actually, it was a coincidence. I wanted to go to France, but while I was in Denmark I found work in Germany.


What do you love about Berlin?

Not needing a car.


What do you miss in Berlin?

The sea.


What is your favorite spot in Berlin?

My flat in Prenzlauer Berg


Would you say you are a different person in Berlin? A different translator? And if yes, in what way?

Every so often I am a different person. There are many me’s.
