Vita

Stéphanie Lux was born in Thionville, France, in 1978. She studied German in Nancy, Strasbourg, and Leipzig. After two internships at the literary agency copywrite in Frankfurt am Main and the publishing house Actes Sud in Arles, she participated in the Goldschmidt Programme for young German-French literary translators in 2004, whereupon she signed her first translation contract and moved to Berlin. In 2006, she participated at the Sommerakademie and in 2007 and 2014 at the Internationale Übersetzertreffen at the LCB. In 2013 she also got invited to the German-French Übersetzerwerkstatt Vice-Versa in Arles. She  returned to the city in 2015 with a residency grant from the Robert Bosch Stiftung. She lives as a literary translator in Berlin and also translates punk books, exhibition catalogues, and artist monographs (sometimes from English). Since 2013 she now and again occasionally works at the bookshop Anakoluth.

6 Questions

What brought you to Berlin? Love? World politics? Or was it a coincidence?

Friendship. My wonderful co-translators from the Goldschmidt Programme 2004.

What do you love about Berlin?

The fact that one can casually transport  any sort of object through the streets and carry anything with oneself on the metro, as if it were the most natural thing. The flea market atmosphere.

What do you miss in Berlin?

Ombres blanches ('White Shadows'), a bookshop in Toulouse. And a little bit also the light of the south.

What is your favorite spot in Berlin?

Arkonaplatz in Mitte, my first Kiez.

Would you say you are a different person in Berlin? A different translator? And if yes, in what way?

Hard to say, I have always been translating here. For many years now Paul Auster's words have been accompanying me: The world is in my head. My body is in the world.

Which existing literary work do you wish you would have written?

Pas pleurer“ (Don't Cry) by Lydie Salvayre.
