In diesem Gespräch zwischen Georges Khalil und Ella Shohat geht es um die Dislokationen aus dem Nahen Osten und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Identität, auch in ihrem europäischen und amerikanischen Kontext. Seit den 1980er Jahren hinterfragt Shohats interdisziplinäre Arbeit den Binarismus Arabisch-gegen-Jüdisch, der nicht nur in der politischen Arena, sondern auch im intellektuellen und kulturellen Bereich vorherrscht. Ihre transregionale Perspektive hat "Exil", "Diaspora" und "Rückkehr" aufgegeben und verschlungene Landschaften der Zugehörigkeit aufgedeckt. Sie theoretisierte "den arabischen Juden" als zentrales Konzept, um nicht nur Tropen des Verlusts, sondern auch grenzüberschreitende Potenziale zu vermitteln. In ihrer Arbeit hat sie so heikle Themen wie die Verbindungen zwischen "den beiden 1492ern" (der Vertreibung und der "Entdeckung"), die Narration jüdischer Vergangenheiten in muslimischen Räumen, koloniale Brüche und die orientalistische Aufspaltung von "dem Araber" und "dem Juden" sowie Teilung, Vertreibung und die Anomalien des Nationalen, in denen die "Versammlung der Exilanten" neue exilische Situationen produzierte, ausgepackt. Das Gespräch wird sich mit ihrem diasporischen kritischen Denken befassen, das die substratale Verflechtung von normalerweise getrennten Geographien, auch zwischen arabischen Räumen und Amerika, unterstreicht. This conversation between Georges Khalil and Ella Shohat will address dislocations from the Middle East and their impact on identity, including within their European and American contexts. Since the 1980s, Shohat's interdisciplinary work has been challenging the Arab-versus-Jew binarism, preeminent not merely in the political arena but also in the intellectual and cultural domains. Her transregional perspective resignified “exile,” “diaspora,” and “return,” revealing intricate landscapes of belonging. She theorized “the Arab-Jew” as a pivotal concept to convey not only tropes of loss but also of cross-border potentialities. Throughout her work, she has unpacked such fraught issues as: the links between “the two 1492s” (the Expulsion and “the Discovery”); the narrativization of Jewish pasts in Muslim spaces; colonial ruptures and the Orientalist splitting of “the Arab” and “the Jew;” as well as partition, displacement, and the anomalies of the national in which the “Ingathering-of-the-Exiles” produced new exilic situations. The conversation will address her diasporic critical thinking, underscoring the substratal interconnectedness of usually segregated geographies, including between Arab spaces and the Americas. The conversation will deal with writing linked to both the scholarly and the personal-memoirish contexts.
