What brought you to Berlin? Love? World politics? Or was it a coincidence?

I first came to Berlin in 1998. It was a different time. The artists and writers I met were less focused on careers and more on disturbing shit and dancing. There was a lot of dancing in those days. Nobody sat still. I kept coming back, and finally, when I received a year-long stipendium at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, I decided to move to Berlin. I bought a flat in Wedding when it was still cheap. While I had to go back to Canada for a while due to health and financial reasons, I came back this last time for work and love during the pandemic.

What do you love about Berlin?

Ich liebe es, dass es eine Stadt ist, die sich ständig verändert und weiterentwickelt. Ich liebe die Stille der Straßen bei Nacht. Ich liebe die Parks und Friedhöfe, in denen man nachdenken kann, und die Tatsache, dass man zu den seltsamsten Zeiten an den seltsamsten Orten landen kann. Ich liebe ihre Improvisation.

What do you miss in Berlin?

Ich vermisse die Tage der Spontaneität, als man einfach loszog und vielleicht ein paar Tage lang nicht nach Hause kam, nur weil etwas Interessantes passiert war. Ich vermisse auch das Leben, als alles noch so billig war, dass nichts wirklich wichtig schien, und Arbeitslosigkeit die Norm war.

Would you say you are a different person in Berlin? A different translator? And if yes, in what way?

Früher dachte ich, dass ich in meinen Texten hier politischer bin, und das stimmt auch, zumindest im journalistischen Bereich. Aber in meiner Lyrik und Prosa bleiben die Stimme und die Themen meiner Meinung nach dieselben.
